What is homocystinuria?
Homocystinuria is a disorder of the amino acid methionine caused by enzyme deficiency. Toxic substances build up in the blood and urine if it is left untreated. It is a very rare disorder.
How is homocystinuria treated?
Homocystinuria is treated with a low protein diet using methionine exchanges, which are swapped to vary the diet. There are many low protein food alternatives available such as bread, biscuits, all purpose flour for baking, pizza bases and pasta. These products provide the diet with variety and a useful source of energy. A methionine-fee amino acid supplement is also given. The diet is regularly monitored and reviewed by a specialist dietitian.
The Juvela Low Protein Team are also doing our best to develop low protein recipes to make your diet as varied as possible, so that you are not missing out at mealtimes and snack time!
